ERE explained

ERE types: which feedstock counts?

HVO, methanol and biomethane do not have a fixed ERE type. For biofuels, the feedstock determines the category. Electricity and RFNBOs have separate categories.

The six types

Since 2026, the Netherlands has used emission reduction units, known as EREs. The calculation reflects avoided greenhouse gas emissions across the fuel chain. The type of unit determines how a fuel supplier can use it.

TypeWhat generates it?
ERE-GAdvanced biofuels from feedstocks in Annex IX-A of the Renewable Energy Directive and its Dutch implementation in Annex 5.
ERE-BBiofuels from Annex IX-B feedstocks, including used cooking oil and category 1 and 2 animal fats.
ERE-CConventional biofuels from food and feed crops.
ERE-OOther eligible biofuels outside G, B and C.
ERE-RCertified renewable fuels of non-biological origin: RFNBOs.
ERE-ERenewable electricity supplied to transport.

These are the NEa categories. A waste material does not automatically qualify as advanced. The specific feedstock must meet the relevant list entry and definition.

The same fuel can carry a different letter

HVO made from used cooking oil falls under ERE-B. HVO from an eligible advanced feedstock can generate ERE-G. Maize-based bioethanol falls under ERE-C; ethanol from straw can qualify for ERE-G. All other booking conditions still apply.

Check the feedstock on the proof of sustainability, including its origin and any restrictions. Compare it with the REV reference data. If a feedstock is missing, contact the NEa. Choosing the nearest available name does not substantiate a claim.

Category 3 animal fat carries a factor of 0.5 for ERE-O. This changes the number of units awarded. The former HBE double counting for certain waste materials has ended.

The destination determines the sector

The first letter identifies the sector: LRE for land, BRE for inland shipping and ZRE for maritime shipping. HVO from used cooking oil supplied to road transport can, for example, generate LRE-B.

Eligible biofuels also differ by sector. Since 2026, conventional biofuels cannot be booked for inland shipping. Only G and O biofuels qualify for maritime shipping. HVO from used cooking oil therefore does not generate ZRE-B.

ERE-G and ERE-R have minimum targets. ERE-B and ERE-C face restrictions. The percentages and rules for using units from another sector vary by sector and year.

Start with the actual supply

Before estimating revenue, establish the fuel, feedstock, authorised booking party and destination. Add the sustainability evidence and emissions value. The product name on the invoice provides too little information.
